Frank Horvat was born in 1928, in Abbazia, Italy (now Opatija, Croatia). 1939–45, lived in Lugano, Switzerland. When he was fifteen, he swapped his postage stamp collection against a 35 mm Retinamat camera. 1947–50, studied art at the Accademia di Brera in Milano, Italy. First trip to Paris, where he met Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa. 1954-55, moved to London working mainly for Life and Picture Post. 1955, moved to Paris where he still lives. 1957-62, became a fashion photographer working for Jardin Des Modes, Elle, Glamour, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, etc. in Europe and USA. Between 1958 and 1961 he was part of Magnum as an associate photographer. Personal projects : Portraits of Trees, Very Similar, New York Up and Down, A Daily Report, Homage to Catalonia, La Véronique.
